Forager Magazine Creative Process

Forager thumbnails

I started with some ideas about what type of articles I wanted to write and potential images to go with each one, and then fleshed out some layout ideas in the thumbnail and roughs stages. This allowed me to process what parts of the design worked and what I needed to revamp.

Forager logo

I wanted something bold and blocky for the title text, and a lighter easy-to-read article text. Since Forager is about survival, I used a deer in the logo; they are prey animals that need to search for food to survive, and for North American Native tribes deer are messengers, animals of power, and a totem representing sensitivity, intuition, and gentleness. The bright orange is used as a symbol of fire - the most essential element for survival in the wilderness, caution, and visibility.
